For any up-and-coming actress, making her red carpet debut is intimidating. It’s even more intimidating when that debut is for the biggest, most-hyped movie of the summer. And we imagine it’s triply intimidating when you’re going high heel-to-high heel with two red carpet veterans like Cara Delevingne and Margot Robbie. But not only has Karen Fukuhara, who plays Katana inSuicide Squad, held her own, her cool-girl style has been turning heads as much as that of her established co-stars. We chatted with her stylistJessica Pasterall about the star’s spotlight moment, from her sassy minis to glamorous gowns.
Speaking of those gowns: for the movie’s London (above left) and N.Y.C. premieres (above right), Paster wanted to put Fukuhara, 24, in two very different looks — the second, a sheer Reem Acra gown worn with Anita Ko jewelry and a dark wine lip, picked to be the sexy counterpoint to the floaty, princess-y periwinkle Valentino the actress wore to the N.Y.C. premiere on Monday. And though both dresses look made for Fukuhara, Paster says, the Valentino look came together mere hours before the star’s big moment.
“That happened the day of. I sent her into Valentino and we found a dress there,” Paster says, adding that she wasn’t on hand in N.Y.C. to see the try-on so had to approved the outfit over the phone. “Everyone wants to wear Valentino, it’s is just so gorgeous. They were so unbelievable. They tailored it for me [that day]. And I had packed her a bag of jewelry and accessories for another dress, and that all worked out beautifully.”

“Karen is brave. Karen has confidence. And Karen is a lot of fun,” Paster says. “She has fun everyday style. The story we were trying to tell is a little more clean. I just wanted her to look beautiful and people to get to know her.”

Paster also explains that (unsurprisingly) there’s a certain “hierarchy of designers lending clothes” for different events, and due to Fukuhara’s relative newcomer status, she would have to go in a different direction to stand out. “I knew certain designers that were gonna dress the other girls, I knew not to even bother to go there ’cause I knew what the response was gonna be,” Paster explains. “I did go with designers that the girls usually don’t wear. I think that what I wanted to do was introduce the fashion world and introduce Katana fans to what Karen was all about. Does that make sense? I’m not gonna go and compete — it wasn’t about that and it would be silly of me to do that.”

But from their first collaboration at CinemaCon last year (left) to her big moment at Comic-Con this summer, it’s clear that Fukuhara is going to be one to watch on the fashion scene — after all, as Paster points out, you can’t go too big for a comic book movie red carpet like this. “Nah, have fun!” she says. “When you’re first starting, the clothes, you need to have that confidence. I think it’s very important that we know who you are. I don’t want people to go, Oh my God, that dress was so beautiful. What’s the actress’s name who wore it? I want people to remember Karen and everything that she does because she is this talented, adorable, the cutest, most fun girl ever.”
