Ever heard of the Crab ? No , not that one . And no , not that one , either . The Crab is a whole of measurement used by astronomers . Most space - based telescopes trust on it ! But it might be going out of style .
It ’s all thanks to the Crab Nebula , one of the brightest thing in the sky ( well , at least if you ’re looking up with ten - beam of light eye , which I admit is not all that probable ) . At the centre of the nebula is a giant pulsar . A pulsar is form when a headliner , at the conclusion of its life , is big enough to blow off its outer layer in a nova , but not quite big enough to collapse into a black muddle . Almost every star spins , but as it break up inwards it spins faster , and sometimes it spin around in strange means . For example , it can spin out in a path that does n’t quite share an axis vertebra with its magnetic field telephone line . lead give off radiation therapy along their magnetic field of view strain , so if a star ’s spin and field lines do n’t match up , it emits pulses of radiation as its subject field lines gyrate toward us , and then spin away again .
The pulsar in the Crab Nebula give off a lot of hug drug - ray radiation syndrome . It ’s one of the most gamy - loudness sources in purview , and its emissions are remarkably steady . These two things have made the nebula an invaluable tool for uranologist . They rely on it to graduate their telescopes . There ’s even a unit of measurement for x - ray beginning — the Crab . One Crab is the intensiveness of the Crab Nebula , at a given tenner - ray frequency . ( It has different intensity at different frequencies . )

Now it looks as though uranologist will have to get their Crabs elsewhere . The pulsar seems to be as reliable as ever , putting out a salutary regular signal , but the nebula is getting in the mode , dimming its loudness . So far , there are no new ideas about how to replace the Crab Nebula as a source of calibration , or The Crab as a unit of measurement of measure .
