Her Infernal Descent
It is not rare in the mankind of funny books for a person to be presented with the opportunity to embark upon a journeying into the Hell to save the soul of a loved one from damnation . It ’s much rarer , though , for these sorts of adventure to begin with a visit from the flavor of 19th - century poet William Blake .
Her Infernal Descent tells the tarradiddle of Lynn , a middle - aged widow who ’s careen from the recent death of her children . Alone , Lynn wanders through her home unmoored from her life and unsure of how to make sense of reality when , quite randomly , the ghost of William Blake show up in her attic with a suggestion he bear in rhyme . Should Lynn agree to accompany him down through the nine circles of hell , Blake explains , she ’ll be able to bet with Lucifer for the soul of her family and likely lend them home .
Rather than responding with fear , cushion , or really any sorting of alarm system , Lynn ’s first chemical reaction it to roll her eyes at the ghost , secernate him to get out her family , and mock him for speak in prose , but she does n’t immediately dismiss the idea of economise her phratry . With nothing go away to mislay , she excuse to the persistent Blake , nothing really affright her anymore , at least not the idea of bargaining with the devil . Her Infernal Descent shares a premise and many beats with Dante ’s Inferno , but the comic introduces a number of Modern narrative constituent that make it feel novel and distinct .
Instead of marveling in terror and awe at seeing inferno , Lynn ’s mostly annoyed by the hard drink she meet in Limbo , the first stop on her journey , where all of the unbaptized Christians and Pagans cling out to talk about themselves ad nauseam . She tunes out Plato , Socrates , and Aristotle the way one might block a group of bloviate troll on Twitter , chiefly because they ’re a nuisance — but also because buried deeply beneath her facing of indifference , she feels a form of hope for the first time in a long while that she might be able-bodied to put her life back together . Joe Henderson ’s Skyward adopt casadastraphobia ( the irrational number yet horrifying concern of fall into the sky ) and turns it into an interesting premise to explore the way our society works . When the Earth ’s gravitation of a sudden becomes a mere fraction of what it used to be , people ( and anything else not connected bolted to the ground ) across the planet float up into the breeze and … just keep going , never to get back down . The rock-bottom gravitational attraction leads to the death of unnumerable people inauspicious enough to have been untethered on “ G - Day ” but is also the beginning of a rudimentary chemise in beau monde .
Twenty years after G - Day , the world is a different place where — even though literally everyone flies now , by flinging themselves between dissimilar points physically tight to one another — most people are effectively grounded to the space near them , because traveling between cities and countries is far too grave . Willa , a courier too young to think of life before it was practically weightless , dreams of move beyond the boundaries of her Chicago neighbourhood . Willa ’s Padre , though , a scientist who predicted that G - Day would go on , refuse to permit his girl drift too far from his sight , a reception tied to the fact that Willa ’s mother died on G - Day . Skyward definitely fall into the custom of exploring the way in which the bonds between crime syndicate can be strained and worm by emotional trauma , but the mirthful turns those dynamics into something exciting and new with its unique metaphor that are root in real - man physics .
