One of the enduring concerns of Game of Thrones , week after week , has been where power comes from . But last night ’s episode , instead , gave us a windowpane into where power goes .
We saw several unpleasant glimpses of the remainder resultant role of the struggles of the powerful , and we learn one basic deterrent example : True power usually means that you get other people to do your unsportsmanlike study , so your own hand can stay clean .
Spoilers ahead …
Of naturally , reasonably much the first lesson of Game of Thrones came from Ned Stark : The man who excrete the sentence should swing the axe . Robb not only accepts the ugly result of his war , he also rejects the offering from the loathsome Lord Roose Bolton to torture some captive on his behalf — using the Bolton family ’s favourite method acting , flaying . Robb designate out , sensibly , that his own sisters are prisoners , so it ’s in his own interest not to coiffure a precedent for excruciate prisoner . Good King Joffrey , Sadist and Voyeur
In any shell , Robb establish that he ’s happy to get muck on his work force when necessary , and he wo n’t let anybody torture others on his behalf . Thus setting a tone which the ease of the episode decidedly fails to live up to . We in a flash cut to Good King Joffrey , who ’s hearing a bizarrely distorted version of the conflict ’s events , involving whole armies of wolves and cannibalism .
Joffrey ’s reply to this tardy indignation ? have one of his Kingsguard , Ser Meryn Trant , beat and strip his fiancée Sansa Stark in the throne - elbow room . Says Joff : “ allow her face . I care her pretty . ”
But he ’s interrupted by his uncle Tyrion Lannister , who rescues Sansa and reminds Joffrey that the unrestrained King thought he could do whatever he wanted — and Joffrey ’s uncle Jaime killed him . Ser Meryn accuses Tyrion of threatening the King , and Tyrion respond : “ I ’m not threatening the King . I ’m educating my nephew . Bronn , the next prison term Ser Meryn speaks , bolt down him . That was a threat . See the departure ? ”
As he leave her from the throne - room , Tyrion quietly demand Sansa if she wants to be countenance out of her participation to the bastard King , and she proclaim her making love for Joffrey . Tyrion marvels : “ Lady Stark , you may survive us yet . ”
matter is , Tyrion is n’t above having other people do his dirty work , too . In fact , it ’s somewhat much all he does . See above , with him ordering Bronn to kill Ser Meryn . Even though she yells at him to get out , you’re able to tell she ’s thinking about it . And then miserable Cat weeps over the bones of the all - too - honest Ned Stark .

Once Tyrion has turned Lancel into his bitch , he ordinate his full cousin to spot on Cersei for him . Meanwhile , Tyrion agrees to release Pycelle in the cockcrow — although he ca n’t swear that he has n’t harmed a hair on Pycelle ’s head , since he sliced off the humanity ’s beard .
Letting multitude lust works , too
Meanwhile , just as Daenerys and her followers are start to lose hope , one of her three passenger returns with a novel horse cavalry and a substance : The elderberry bush of Qarth are honored to take in the Mother of Dragons . The burning rat is like a symbol of this whole episode
You would think that an episode that features a woman being break with a wand and a military man having his foot sliced off could n’t perchance get any more horrible . And then you issue forth to the burn rat torture successiveness . They take place at Harrenhal — which , like Qarth , look fucken coolheaded , but for totally different reasons . Harrenhal is melted and deformed , as a resultant of a long - ago attack of flying lizard attack .
And yes , this is the place that Tyrion fake - offered to Littlefinger when he was quiz everybody ’s loyalty — the place that Littlefinger said was cursed . To which Tyrion respond that Littlefinger could deplumate the space down and rebuild it . Now , the once - proud castle is full of the stench of corpses , and there are so many prisoner , the cells are overflowing . We watch a stagnant - eyed old adult female grieve for her newly beat son , plus her latterly drained sister and hubby .
And there , we meet the Tickler . He ’s very glad to order others to torture on his behalf — using a weird arrangement of a pail , a terrified rat , and an open flame . ( So now Arya is Tywin ’s handmaid , and Tyrion ’s girlfriend is Arya ’s babe ’s servant . This should be interesting . )
You do n’t win battles with clean method
At the top of the hour , Lord Roose Bolton admonish Robb Stark that he ca n’t butt his regular army down the high road . And the sequence ends with a similar homily : King Stannis tells his most close retainer , Ser Davos Seaworth the Onion Knight , that “ clean ways do n’t win warfare . ”
King Stannis has just been on the receiving end of a lecture from his crony , King Renly , about what makes you a king . Having friends is the source of might , and Stannis has no friends , because he never feel he require any . Stannis sound out anyone who deny his right to the throne is his enemy , to which Renly respond : “ The whole land deny it from Dorne to the Wall . And he asks Ser Davos to be a smuggler once again , to nobble Melisandre ashore .
It ’s worth pausing to consider the write up of Ser Davos — he was a moon-curser , who broke the law . But during a siege , he smuggle onions and other foods to Stannis , bring through him and his men . Stannis rewarded Davos for his heroism by making him a horse — but penalise him for smuggling by cutting off four fingers . ( And now Davos wears those fingerbones around his neck . ) This is a symbol of Stannis ’ inflexible bond to his own sense of right and ill-timed — which somehow does n’t forbid covert assassination via trace creatures in the night .
Because Ser Davos will do anything Stannis mastery , he sneaks Melisandre ashore , and is treated to a lecture on morality for his pain in the neck . She claims to be a horse , of sorts , and a handmaid of good and justice . Davos , being naturalistic , say he ’s a mixture of adept or bad — but she says an onion plant that ’s half rotten is a rotten onion plant . And then she turn on the sexitude , telling him he ’ll get to see what ’s under her robe .
Once they ’re in position , cheeseparing to Renly ’s stronghold , she strip off let out her meaning stomach , then pass on birth to a unearthly oily shadow beast .
