The “ true narrative ” of a robot who shot his Maker in 1932
Zorine the Queen of the Nudists and Alpha the Mechanical Man

In 1932 American paper started publishing wildly magnified story about a British robot name Alpha that allegedly blinked to life , rise to his foot , andshot his artificer . Some of the account quoted the artificer , Harry May , as order that he jazz Alpha would move around against him one solar day . An editorial from Louisiana even predicate that the epoch of Mary Shelley ’s Frankenstein was upon us . But just two years later Alpha made a trip to the United States in a whirlwind of guns , gadget and young lady .
Inthis film from 1934we see Alpha shooting a ordnance adulterate with blanks , answering questions about his height and weight , and being particularly mean to a brunette who plainly was n’t blond enough to be Alpha ’s Bridget . Though Professor May take that Alpha autonomously answer to speech with 20 or 30 wax piston chamber that played pre - recorded answers , this seems quite unlikely .
The November 5 , 1934 issuance ofTimemagazine key a manifestation of Alpha at Macy ’s department storehouse in Manhattan :

Last week Alpha , the robot , made its first public visual aspect in the U. S. One of the most ingenious automatons ever contrive by man , a grim and gleaming monster 6 ft . 4 in . tall , the golem was brought to Manhattan by its owner - artificer - impresario , Professor Harry May of London , and set up on the fifth floor of R. H. Macy & Co. ’s department store . encase from head to foot in chromium - plat brand armor , Alpha sat on a specially construct dais with its cumbersome foot firmly bolted to the base , star impassively over the slub of newshawks and store officials waiting for the first demonstration . The puppet had a groovy morose snatch of a rima oris , Brobdingnagian protuberant eyes , bushy whorl of drift metal . In one mailed clenched fist Alpha clutched a revolver .
It ’s rather peculiar to read later in the article that he ’s described as yield a Nazi salute during the monstrance . There ’s no clear indicant of what could be viewed as a Nazi salutation from the film I ’ve seen , and without a byline for the Time clause I ca n’t even begin to judge about the writer ’s sympathy .
The remainder of the article does help to elucidate what happened that day , when Alpha was purported to have sprung to life and shot his discoverer :

Once it fired its pistol without admonition , blast the skin off the professor ’s arm from wrist to elbow . Another time it lowered its arm out of the blue , struck an assistant on the shoulder , offend him so badly that he was hospitalize .
