Thanks toNASA ’s Juno commission , researchers have finally find a map of Jupiter ’s magnetic field and it is quite something . The magnetosphere of Jupiter is not just very dissimilar from Earth ’s , it is also unlike any other planet in the Solar System .
Scientists had grounds suggesting that the Jovian magnetic field was particular but the new analysis , published inNature , shows just how complex the field really is . The planet has the stock dipole you might have seen in a diagram , the lines connecting the North and South Pole . But it ’s also much weirder . There is a long magnetic isthmus in the northerly cerebral hemisphere and also a large orbitual region in the Dixieland that the team has nicknamed the " Great Blue Spot " . The spot is not actually blue , unlike Jupiter’sgiant blood-red tempest , the name comes from the color coding of magnetic field , red for north , blue for south ( just like in plaything attractor ) .
These non - dipolar anatomical structure are very different from Earth ’s . On our major planet , the non - dipole regions are evenly distribute but on Jupiter , they are mostly found in the northern hemisphere . Although it can not probe the core of the planet , Juno was able to measure that the northern hemisphere dance band becomes narrow with depth , suggesting that the realm from which it originates is localise .
“ The main surprise was that Jupiter ’s plain is so dim-witted in one hemisphere and so complicated in the other , " pass author Kimberly Moore toldNewsweek . " None of the existing theoretical account predict a field like that . "
" We were also surprised to find out the Great Blue Spot is a unique feature of speech in the subject area . When we first find it on Juno ’s first orbit , we thought there would be others like it , but that ’s not the case , ” she added .
The causal agency of the rum magnetic field is not exactly clear . The core of Jupiter is believe to be made of metal hydrogen , a singular nation where the common gas behaves like an electrical conductor . The squad advise that the magnetic core might be layer , with a top layer made of pure metallic hydrogen and a core layer where rocks and sparkler are break up in the H , just like saltiness is dissolved in seawater . The team believe that there are ways to understand what actually fail on inside Jupiter . This map was obtained using eight flybys of the major planet by Juno .
