Firefighter Cody Mooney is still saving lives, even in death.
The 31-year-old from Colorado had undergone an operation in mid-February to help in his fight against an aggressive form of brain cancer that was discovered in his brainstem two years ago, according toCBS 4. But Mooney would later experience complications after returning home to recover, and died on Saturday, leaving behind a pregnant wife and four children.
After his death, Littleton Adventist Hospital staff, Mooney’s family and fellow firefighters from South Metro Fire Rescue lined the halls of the medical center to escort him before his organs were donated.
“At the young age of only 31 years old, Cody was taken from this world too soon,” the department continued. “Firefighter Mooney leaves behind a beautiful family including his wife (who is expecting their fifth child in just a few weeks), as well as their other four children.”
About 20 people a day die awaiting organ transplants, according to theAmerican Transplant Foundation, and there are over 115,000 people currently on the waiting list to receive a life-saving organ. One donor can save up to eight lives, the foundation says, and can save or enhance the lives of a hundred others. Now Mooney will be helping to change the lives of people who are in desperate need of the precious gift of organ donation.
“He would do this for anybody else. He would be there if you needed it,” Kevin Mooneysaid. “He gave his heart, he always gave his heart.”
AGoFundMehas been set up to help the family after the passing of Mooney, who was their sole provider. It has raised nearly $150,000 of its $250,000 goal as of Tuesday morning.
“My sweet precious love finished his fight strong and is in the arms of Jesus He took so much of me with him,” his wife wrote on the donation page. “But our fight isn’t over. And we will keep fighting just as hard in the days to come, in honor of him.”
There will be a memorial service for Mooney on March 8 at Mission Hills Church near his home in Littleton, Colorado.
