Seriously , last night ’s Falling Skies season finale was like a masterclass in fail . Pulled punches . Alien clichés , done badly . Characters with no purpose . And most of all , a story that seemed to be buy the farm nowhere . Spoilers ahead …
I ’ve had profoundly interracial feelings about Falling Skies time of year three , which seemed to be trying to make a clump of hasty decisions from last year ’s season finale body of work . include the brand unexampled outlander , the Volm . Plus frame an alien twisting on Tom and Anne ’s babe . And then Hal having an eyebug , which spun out into Lourdes having an eyebug .
But last dark ’s finale pushed the finding of fact pretty steadfastly over into damaging dominion , establish how rickety most of these plot line were played out .
So in last night ’s closing curtain , Tom and the gang attack the EspheniTower in Boston , while Dan and Pope mount a diversionary attack in Chicago — and it ’s ludicrously easy , and they come through , and everyone survives . Because the all - conquering unstoppable Espheni have been reduced to five Skitters and a couple shuttlecraft , after Tom tout up a atomic power plant . Okay then .
And then the Volm land in strength , and they ’re get going to kick the Espheni ’s screwing for us . Until we find out that this is literally straight — we ’re not just start to be bank on the Volm to do most of the fighting for us ( which was the plan before they land ) , they want to do all the fighting . With the humans relocate to a good haven in Brazil . They are going to relocate the humans by force , until Tom says “ human spirit of independency , ” and the Volm realize that humans are the only indigenous lifeforms they ’ve encounter who oppose back and have a construct of freedom and stuff . ( Really ? The ecosystems on those other planets , where nobody fights back , must be really weird . )
So they let Tom and the gang go , and Karen show , up and Tom kills her , and then Maggie doubly kills her , and it ’s ridiculously prosperous . And then we find out that Anne and the baby are alive , except that the sister is now like six class old , because she ’s growing superfast like every other babe in science fiction . And the baby cures Lourdes ’ eyebugs , and it ’s ludicrously easy . And then everybody stands around and talks about how hard everything is go to be from here on out .
So pull out punches , I mentioned some above — the assault on the tug is one . The confrontation with Karen is another one . The fact that they get Anne back without make to fight for her or rescue her is a third . But the large and most disastrous rip lick is the Volm — all season , they ’ve been fundamentally ciphers , and there ’s been a huge flashing foretoken saying “ Do n’t hope These guy ” over their foreland . And it turns out their big evil secret is … they want to protect us while they fight with their higher-ranking weaponry , numbers game and equipment on our behalf . Basically , as near as I can severalize , they really do plan to “ free ” the Earth , but they just want to do it themselves without any scrappy underdog get in the elbow room .
And then they ’re fantastically light to talk out of relocating the Second Mass to Boston . There ’s like one tense conniption where Tom shoves Cochise ’s pop , and then they kiss and make up . The Volm are pussycats , basically .
We may recover out next time of year that the Volm are hide other stuff , and that ’s why they wanted the human beings out of the way — Karen hints as much , and this show is n’t subtle enough to just have her be lie — but the time to shake off a bad revelation and have them show some of their ugly side was last dark , while we still cared . The whole season was building up to us find out the accuracy About the Volm , and it was a fizzle .
As for clichés ? rent ’s see . Lourdes ’ eyebugs turn into drug withdrawal for no reason . The Volm were already a huge alien cliché , but when we finally see two member of their species interact , it ’s just clichepalooza . We get no clue how Volm order really play , and instead just see super - stilted flat interactions . The “ diversionary flak ” affair is a cliché this show has done like three time this year . Karen as Overlord is straight out of V. And then the superchild who grows quickly and can fix all your plot of ground problems ? radical cliché .
Beyond that , this show just feel like it ca n’t settle on a tone — we keep bounce between good character - centrical episodes , like last week ’s , and horrendous secret plan - centric episode , like this calendar week ’s . So many of the plotlines this season could have been handle with in one episode , like Hal ’s eyebug , so we could focus on character maturation and on get one single plot of ground that actually works — like the Volm and the Espheni control grid could have .
So why does scientific discipline fable have such a hard meter on television ? Based on this time of year of Falling Skies , it seems like a huge part of it is that while television writing is experience a flowering of quality and fresh estimate in other areas , when it comes to science fiction people just automatically lean on the same handful of formulas that do work at some point in the past . There ’s an overemphasis on trying to storm or shock the referee — there ’s another new extraterrestrial being ! Tom ’s volitionally getting on the exotic starship ! — but a de - stress on keeping your eye on the ball , storytelling - wise . There ’s a need to keep everything cozy , which means no extremity of the Mason crime syndicate will ever be badly suffer . Aliens are just parentage characters — I ca n’t guess any TV show doing vampires as one - dimensional as the Volm were this year . The message is always “ the human spirit is special , ” not anything new or interesting about find out to understand other cultivation .
Falling Skies was never a bully show , but in its first couple time of year it seemed to be endeavor to do something new and interesting with the post - apocalyptic / exotic intrusion genres , particularly in storylines about the harnessed child . But this year , it tried to tell too many stories at once — most of them story that had been say many sentence already — and turned into a stew of missed opportunities .
