David Mitchell ’s Cloud Atlas was a magnificent , confounding book that brought together a host of time and plaza into an interlocking story of oppression and self - breakthrough . It ’s unvoiced to imagine how anyone could top that — but his new novel , the somewhat more cohesiveTheBone Clocks , may have done just that .

Without giving too much away , The Bone Clocks is more firm wondering fable than Cloud Atlas was , and it also has a much tighter storyline , even though it still spans decades and Continent .

The big revelations that occur late in the Word of God make infrangible stark sense in the context of the Word of God ’s beginning , and among the record ’s many other achievements , Mitchell is teaching a bit of a master class in how to weave the paranormal with “ real life ” in a way that feels unseamed and lived - in . The rules of his immortal world power feel nonrational and rotund , even before they ’re explained to us .
This is also a much affectionate Koran than Cloud Atlas , as if rather of just sketching unseeable connections between people , Mitchell was showing a kind of extended mob . If I had any complaints about The Bone Clocks , it would be first , that the segment about the bitter former literary celebrity Crispin Hershey palpate out of place and does n’t bestow as much to the Word of God as the other part — you’re able to distinguish Mitchell had playfulness writing it , and it ’s merriment to read — but it ’s also a turn of an humoring . And also , towards the end of the volume , the lecture about the shortsighted - seeing of our treatment of the environment gets more than a little heavily - handed , even though I concur with all of it .
But those are both pocket-size complaints , about a book that succeeds both as a piece of inquisitive fiction — create a cohesive storyline in which the big mind sense like they weigh and have emotional weight — and as a great narration , with people you give care about and a story that finger like real life , in the absolute best direction .
