Though BoJack Horseman has built up a loyal fanbase since it debut on Netflix four geezerhood ago , there ’s been a contingent who have pick apart the series over the voice casting of one of its independent characters . Creator Raphael Bob - Waksberg was recently need about the issue , and his response was reasonably much the dependable answer that can be given in such a scenario .
Diane Nguyen is the human charwoman initially assigned to ghostwrite BoJack ’s approaching memoir and over the course of instruction of the show , the brace have gone from being ambivalent colleagues to something more like proper ( if a bit dysfunctional ) friend . Allison Brie , the actress who voice Diane , is white and while Diane ’s ethnicity ( she ’s pen as a Vietnamese charwoman ) does n’t always feature prominently in her BoJack Horseman plot agate line , it ’s part of her identity all the same , which is what gave many people intermit when word first broke of Brie ’s casting .
In the four years since BoJack first premiered Jehovah Raphael Bob - Waksberg had n’t really speak out all that much about the charge calling the show out for casting a white actor to depict a character of color . But when a fanrecently askedBob - Waksberg about the show ’s want of internal representation , he said that while he supports the cast he works with now , if given the chance to develop the show now , he ’d make a point of not simply leaning on the melodic theme of colour - blind casting .

At the time , Bob - Waksberg added that he did n’t think Twitter was the best place to fully express his feeling about the whitewashing issue but he followed up in aninterview with Uproxxyesterday where he spell out his thoughts more full .
When asked about whether he knew about the criticisms being leveled against the show , Bob - Waksberg acknowledge that he did and also say he believed no one had ever demand him about it directly in consultation because most of the people interviewing him were other blanched piece :

“ For a while I think , maybe I should n’t be the one having this conversation . Maybe it ’s better if other people are talking about the show — people of coloring material , mass who have lived experience , people who can actually talk about this more articulately than I can . perhaps it ’s better for me to just make the show and attempt to mind to what multitude are saying and adjust [ accordingly . ]
But more and more I palpate like this is my show and these are decisions that I ’ve made and it ’s my duty to talk about them even if it ’s going to be cumbersome and even if it ’s going to feel unearthly for me … I think it ’s deserving talking about and I feel like my quiet can be read as ‘ There ’s not a problem here ’ and I ’m not comfortable with that anymore . ”
This is how you own up to a error in public , keep it moving , and let everybody make out you ’re going to do your blame to do better in the futurity .
