Loihi , a neuromorphic research chip developed by Intel , has learned to smell , according to a recent report fromPCWorld . Intel team up with Cornell University to train Loihi to recognize the scent of 10 potentially hazardous chemical substance , like acetone , ammonia , and methane . This artificial nose seems to be closer in function to a hot dog ’s nose , or those handheld detectors you might have seen the Department of Homeland Security role at an airdrome to ‘ smell ’ traces of explosive materials . Instead of sample to find the chemicals themselves , Intel and Cornell were model what happens in the human brain when it detect a smell , with the help of 72 chemical sensing element .
