Apple Watch’s Faces Finally Don’t Suck

I’velong complainedabout Apple ’s Watch faces . These were an ugly mix of skeuomorphic ( aka realistic ) pattern melded with someone ’s estimate of what a fancy watch face might look like . Now , with WatchOS 7 , they ’re ultimately getting the hang of thing .

The new GMT face is the most interesting . It offers a Rolex - inspired split anchor ring configuration that points to the current minute on a 24 - hour track . The fact that it switch timezones automatically is great , and because of its downright simplicity , you get more of what a GMT watch offer : easy - to - learn timezone transitions on the route .

The countdown ( aka Countup ) show is like in its readability and elegance . For those of us who mostly use the Apple Watch timing features to clock baking times or to give ourselves an extra five hour of sleep , this font makes gross sense . Further , it looks very similar to a standard timing bezel , allowing you to scuff it around to arrange your trust slide by time . A great addition .

woefully , the Chronograph fount did n’t get the memorandum when it come to readability . It has a sure Omega Speedmaster style to it , but it by all odds does n’t win any award for simplicity .

lastly , the clever Typographic show looks like something out of a 1980s Swatch line up — and that ’s a good thing . It ’s eminently readable and very singular . Even well , I think , is the wonderfully clever Artist face that is truly the only one that showcases everything the Apple Watch really is : a powerful figurer with a dandy screen that can generate random faces in seconds .

Apple has n’t done sound watch face for a farsighted time . They ’ve render to do deception that mimic traditional horology in a way that does n’t quite employment . With these new faces — face that only an Apple Watch ( or standardised articulatio radiocarpea computing gadget ) could produce — finally makes the Watch make gumption .
