Scientists have announced the discovery of a newfound crocodile coinage that may have been the largest to ever roam the Earth . The prodigious reptiles trolled East African waters between 4 million and 2 million years ago , and may have snacked on human ancestors , researchers said .

The great fossil specimens recover belong to massive crocodiles some 25 feet ( 7.5 beat ) in length ; and theancient giantsmay have grown larger than 27 foot ( 8 meter ) , grant to Christopher Brochu , an associate professor of geosciences at the University of Iowa .

Brochu slip up upon the new specie three years ago , while examining enormous fossil housed at the National Museum of Kenya in Nairobi . " We do n’t actually have fossil homo remain with croc pungency , but the crocs were bigger than today ’s crocodiles , and we were smaller , so there probably was n’t much bitter involved , " he said .

Brochu ’s research is write in the May 3 payoff of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology .
